AUTOMATED IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (AIS) REQUIREMENTS

The Maritime Reporter, May issue reports that The Panama Canal Authority has issued a maritime advisory stating that, effective July 1, 2003 vessels over 300 gt or measure 66 ft (20m) overall, must be equipped with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder that meets IMO requirements.  Until January 1, 2005 when the AIS requirement comes fully into effect, portable AIS units may be rented from the Canal Authority.  Owners and operators are reminded of the requirement for the installation of a Pilot Plug and power source for AIS use by the Canal Pilot.

AIS is a transponder system that reports the vessel’s identification, course and direction to port and security authorities.
