NEW PORT IN MEXICO

The government of Mexico along with local governments in Baja Sur and Ensenada have entered negotiations for the building of a mega-container port south of Ensenada on the Baja pennisula.

Various shipping companies are taking a hard look at cargo only port that would provide rail and air service to the rest of North America.

Although no plans are final, the port would produce thousands of jobs for local people and provide substantial revenue to the rest of Baja.

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach would probably not be affected in the long run due to the increased traffic into those ports. It would effect the long term expansion projects and should reduce the congestion existing in the ports now.

This is not related to the LNG port also planned north of Ensenada.

US Gulf Update

The unprecedented devastation in the US Gulf will prove to be an engine driving new business for the maritime industry.  Work for divers, welders, shipyards and other construction companies should continue for the foreseeable future.

The biggest problem will be housing for employees and basic services.  Offshore damage has not been fully evaluated but is expected to be substantial.

This should give a burst of engery for the boat building and construction industries in the Gulf.

Long term benefits should also effect the industry in other parts of the country.
